In Episode 5 of Demon Slayer Season 3, we dive deeper into the Swordsmith Village arc, and things get heated with epic battles and unexpected twists. The swift Mist Hashira, Muichiro Tokito, races to rescue swordsmith Kanamori while carrying a young boy named Kotetsu on his back. Along their journey, they come face to face with the formidable Upper Moon demon, Gyokko.
Gyokko, the crafty demon, unveils his grotesque “creations” and engages Tokito in a fierce and thrilling battle. As the intensity rises, the lovely Love Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji, joins the fray, swiftly eliminating the troublesome fish demons that have been causing chaos in the village.
Meanwhile, our protagonists, Tanjiro and Nezuko, confront the tricky Hantengu demon and find themselves in a heart-pounding showdown against its three formidable clones. This leads to an exhilarating confrontation where Tanjiro unleashes the breathtaking Hinokami Kagura breathing technique, showcasing his incredible skills.
As the episode reaches its climax, Tanjiro unexpectedly crosses paths with Genya, and things take a mysterious turn. Genya’s peculiar behavior hints at a possible transformation into a demon, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting answers.

Episode 6: Genya’s Desperation to Become Hashira
Episode 6 of Demon Slayer: season 3 starts with Tanjiro getting all surprised by Genya’s weird look. He’s like, “Whoa, dude, those decapitated clones are regenerating!” Tanjiro discovers a fifth clone while rescuing Nezuko, as if it’s a hidden extra level or something.
Out of nowhere, Genya starts choking Tanjiro and claims he’s going to be the one to take down the big bad demon and become a Hashira. But Tanjiro responded with full support from him and Nezuko, and Genya was totally confused after hearing this. Then, all the clones heal up and start attacking. Tanjiro tells Genya to hold them off with Nezuko while he goes hunting for the fifth demon.
So, there’s this dude named Karaku who accidentally blows away the smell thingy, and Tanjiro uses his super nose to sniff out the original Hantengu, who’s hiding underground. He sends Genya to go after it and covers for him. But here’s the thing: Tanjiro and Nezuko ain’t doing so well against the clones. On the other hand, Tokito is stuck in a water prison he can’t slash through, and he’s running out of air. Meanwhile, this Gyokko dude is all cocky about it.
Now, back to the clones. Aizetsu stabs Nezuko, but Tanjiro’s quick on his feet, and Sekido’s like, “Whoa, this guy adapts like a boss!” Nezuko pulls out her blood demon art, which worried Sekido. Meanwhile, Genya’s having a hard time finding Hantengu. Tanjiro tries to guide him, and they realize Hantengu’s the size of a mouse and scamper away. Genya’s pissed that such a tiny demon is so damn powerful.
Finally, he slices and shoots at Hantengu, but the demon’s too strong, and the sword breaks. At that moment, Sekido goes for the kill from behind, and Genya knows he’s a goner because if he gets stabbed in the neck, he can’t regenerate. He starts thinkin’ about his regrets, like tryin’ to impress his brother Sanemi Shinazugawa and becoming a Hashira. He also apologizes for some incidentsβyou know, regretting things.
In a flashback, we see that Genya is the little brother of Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira. Now, we all know Sanemi’s a real hardass, quick with his katana, and has a mouth full of insults. But way back, he was just the oldest sibling looking out for his six younger ones. One fateful night, their sweet and kind-hearted mom went missing for hours. And when Sanemi went searching, guess what? The thing that came back wasn’t their mom at all. It was some beastly creature that went on a rampage, tearing apart five of the youngest siblings.
But Sanemi, being the hero he is, jumped in like lightning and fought off the beast. Then Genya, their other brother, rushed out of the house and saw the whole nightmare. He spotted Sanemi, covered in blood, stunned to the core, standing there with their demonized mom’s body burning in the morning sunlight.” Turns out, Sanemi didn’t know she was their mom and killed her, thinking she was a stranger. Genya is horrified, and he rushes to his mother’s side, cursing at Sanemi in disbelief.
Now, on the verge of death, Genya confesses that he never got a chance to apologise. He realizes that his mother was actually a demon, and Sanemi killed her, mistaking her for a stranger. He feels immense guilt for not understanding the pain his brother must have felt upon realizing he had killed their own mother. Memories flood back of Sanemi telling him that they have to protect the family after their father’s demise. But now he feels crushed by their failure.
Suddenly, he hears Sanemi uttering words of disdain, claiming that a scumbag like Genya can never be his brother. It’s revealed that Genya is unable to perform any breathing techniques, which means he can never become a Hashira. In that moment, Tanjiro comes to his rescue, urging him not to give up. As Tanjiro engages Sekido, he encourages Genya to focus solely on slaying Hantengu.
Aizetsu launches a direct attack on Tanjiro, who finds himself unable to dodge. Yet, to his surprise, Genya shields him, taking the brunt of the attack and sustaining severe injuries. Genya confesses that he cannot kill Hantengu himself and passes on the task to Tanjiro. Undeterred, he proceeds to confront Aizetsu. Meanwhile, Tanjiro finally locates Hantengu and unsheathes his sword.
In the epilogue, Tanjiro expresses concern for Genya, mentioning that he hasn’t eaten since they met at the Butterfly Mansion. Genya, annoyed by Tanjiro’s nosiness, retorts that he should mind his own business. Tanjiro casually reminds him that they’re friends, recounting their shared experiences in the hot springs and going through the final selection together. Genya grumbles about Tanjiro’s overly friendly nature, but deep down, he looks forward to their future collaborations.
My thoughts on Episode 6
This episode is gettin’ mad love for its deep emotions, epic battles, and character growth. They really dive into Genya’s messed-up past and what drives him, givin’ his actions some serious weight. Our heroes, Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Genya, gotta face off against Hantengu once again, but this time they know there’s a fifth demon they gotta take down too. The whole episode is all about this hardcore attack where everyone’s at their peak, laser-focused on crushin’ Hantengu’s final form. They also dig deep into Genya’s transformation and his relationship with his bro, showin’ how his messed-up history affects his reserved nature.

The episode hits us with intense flashbacks that hit us right in the feels, showing’ the immense losses all these characters have suffered in their war against demons. We ain’t sure what’s gonna happen to Genya, but the potential for growth and redemption makes his story even more powerful. Oh, and don’t forget, Gyokko’s MIA in this episode, but the animation and visual effects keep bowing’ us away, takin’ this series to new heights. The fight scenes are insane, like Nezuko’s lightning strikes and Tanjiro’s badass magenta fire attacks. Man, they really know how to make it look stunning!

Even though the plot kinda slows down, ‘Aren’t You Going to Become a Hashira?’ brings us some major drama, personal conflicts, and sets the stage for the final showdown in the demon war. Trust me, this episode’s got us all hyped for the next one, ’cause we know it’s gonna be a wild ride full of intense battles and some mind-blowing reveals.
